Arts & Crafts Legs: Like Gus

Wed, 05/24/2017 - 9:01am
 Like Gus

This past week I had a few woodworkers in class to build a Stickley desk based on a L & JG Stickley #602 original. No, we didn’t keep the project as a true reproduction. We added side and rear slats to dress it up a bit, and updated different aspects to make the desk more usable – each woodworker picked and chose where to drift from the original design. I also drifted on my own as I built a desk to serve as a prototype.

Intricacies of a Stanley #244 Miter Box

Fri, 05/12/2017 - 4:13pm
Intricacies of a Stanley #244 Miter Box

If you have a Stanley #244 miter box, or are looking to purchase one, there are a few unique features of which you should be aware. In order to make your setup work as it should, your saw has to be equipped with a small post-like part that’s attached to its spine.

That small part, which is often lost or not included with the purchased of the miter box, trips the automatic catch that allows the saw to release from a locked position in order for the blade to drop onto your workpiece.

Bowling Alley Bench

Bowling Alley Bench

Last year sometime, 360 Woodworking purchased a few slabs of bowling alley with the idea to turn them into workbenches. If you’re not familiar with bowling allies, which I was not, you may be in for a couple of surprises.

Surprise #1 is that a bowling alley is not solid, as in one big-ass piece or block. These lanes were like accordions; they bowed in and out depending on where you applied pressure.

Simple Mitering Jig

Thu, 05/04/2017 - 10:50am
Simple Mitering Jig

While I was working on a tea caddy for an upcoming 360 Woodworking class, I decided to knock out a simple, table saw jig to cut miters on small parts. Normally, I use a miter saw for this work, but with the pieces being small I opted to work on a machine that allowed an easy line of sight at my fingers and hands. Plus, I could install and use a super-thin 7-1/4″ saw blade.

These Are Drying Times

Wed, 04/26/2017 - 5:31am
These Are Drying Times

Many of us woodworkers experience low humidity in Winter – ever listen to your furniture pop and snap as the wood gives in to the dryness? As we move into Spring, the air again gains in moisture and often you can hear your furniture swell back toward fullness. These are drying times.

The same thing happens in the shop. Although because most shops are not as airtight as our living spaces, the trip from overly dry to moisture-laden can be more dramatic.

Milwaukee’s M18 7-1/4″ Circ Saw

Sun, 04/23/2017 - 4:10am
Milwaukee’s M18 7-1/4″ Circ Saw

Right at the top I’m going to say that this tool is not cheap. It is, however, a fantastic tool to have in the shop. I used a Milwaukee M18 7-1/4″ circular saw to breakdown sapele boards as I began a fireplace frame-and-panel wall. It is so nice to simply grab the saw and get to it – no extension cords to hassle needed. And I have yet to slow or stall the saw.

It was even better when one of the guys in for a class purchased a load of lumber and needed to shorten the lengths for the long ride home.

It’s Time to Think Woodworking Classes

It’s Time to Think Woodworking Classes

Moving into warmer Spring and Summer breezes causes many to think about taking woodworking classes – who wants to bet on the weather in January and February, unless you’re south of Cancun? Plus, it’s often the best time to steal away a few days to pump up your woodworking skills.

Classes at 360 Woodworking are often geared toward projects – you learn techniques throughout the week-long class as you build a project such as a Mission desk or oxbow chest.

Maneuver Monster Machines

Maneuver Monster Machines

You used to hear that if we used more of our brains, we could move mountains – thanks, Lucy for making us bust that myth. While a 12″ jointer at 700+ pounds is not quite a mountain, hustling it around a one-man shop is a bit taxing. Using your brain beats using your brawn when you have to maneuver monster machines.

This past Friday I cleared the shop floor to make room for 35 woodworkers from the Cincinnati Woodworkers Club, who were coming in to talk joinery.

Slip Seats Don’t Have to be Uncomfortable

Slip Seats Don’t Have to be Uncomfortable

We have all sat upon those metal folding chairs with the a plywood insert covered with a thin piece of cheap foam and vinyl (Fig. 1). Most times we’ve gotten up wishing we hadn’t because those seats are so uncomfortable. It isn’t so bad if it is just a short visit.

Unfortunately, there are a great many uncomfortable dining, side and occasional chairs out there that leave us with a similar feeling.

Elevate Your Work

Elevate Your Work

This is not about how to elevate your work by taking a class with 360 Woodworking, or learning new skills as you delve into a subscription to 360Woodworking.com – although I’d be happy if you did both or either. (C’mon. I have to do the plug, right?)

This is about a simple, inexpensive way to raise your work when finishing. And it’s done with pieces from the scrap bin and a few brads.

Asa’s Fault

Asa’s Fault

After talking with Asa Christiana for a few 360 Woodworking podcast about building projects using minimal tools and things found on the shelves of home-center stores, I decided to test his beliefs. (The first podcast went live today.)

I strolled up to my local store to walk the isles taking in what was there and what I could put to use in my woodworking or shop. Yea, that’s right. I don’t have anything else to do with my time!

A Departing Founder

A Departing Founder

It’s inevitable that people change positions in the work world – desires change, drive fades or new ideas beckon. And so it is with 360Woodworking.com.

As of April 1, 2017, Chuck Bender, a founding member of the team, has moved on from 360Woodworking. As you may expect, I’m saddened by his departure. I’ll miss – hell, we’ll all miss – his camaraderie and his vast woodworking knowledge. I’m sure that whatever he chooses to do as his next step in life will be special.
